Now Hiring: Sacrificial Lamb

According to the Nashville Post, it appears that Mike McWherter is not going to challenge Lamar Alexander for the Senate in 2008. This doesn't come to me as too terribly surprising, as McWherter always seemed a bit reluctant to put himself out there.

With less than a year to go before the general election, the chances of getting a formidable opponent are slim to none. Bob Tuke may still run for it, but the DSCC is not likely to pump a lot of money (or any for that matter) into this race, so unless someone with a lot of name recognition (and preferably a lot of their own money) jumps in, this is probably going to be a pretty tepid campaign on the part of the Democrats.

I'd love to see someone put

I'd love to see someone put up even token opposition, but the Democratic bench team sucks pond rock here in Tennessee.

Speaking of the DSCC, though: Maybe we should ask Chuck Schumer who we should run. He decided for us last time around, after all.

Bredesen

Drafting Bredesen is really our only hope. Even if he isn't interested we might still be able to pressure him to do it for the good of the party. Otherwise, putting up anyone else is just a waste of money.

Perhaps we could think a bit

Perhaps we could think a bit longer term - one of the reasons we don't have a statewide bench is because there aren't statewide elections for more than a couple of offices (US Senate, Governor).

This direct-appointment stuff for offices like Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor really ought to go. It's a good-ol'-boy protection racket.
