New highway east of Chattanooga

Remember Melissa Ziegler? When the dust settled on the fiasco that left a South Knoxville sinkhole filled with toxic rubble from the old Coster Shop rail yard, she and Leslie Henderson were pointing fingers at each other, unsure who deserved blame for the improper dumping. The matter was settled out of court in Dec. 2005, and Henderson moved on to a Roane County position.

Ziegler now works for Wilbur Smith Associates, and she has been touring southeastern Tennessee and southwestern North Carolina trying to sell officials and residents on a new highway bypassing Ocoee Gorge, part of the decades-old Corridor K project of the Appalachian Regional Commission. The Southeast Industrial Development Association hired Ziegler's firm.

Move over Road to Nowhere, here comes Corridor K!

From the Cleveland

From the Cleveland article:

“Fifty-six percent of businesses currently sell to international customers, 47 percent purchase goods and materials from international suppliers and 41 percent already use east coast ports.”

56% of what businesses? Those in Etowah??

If there's a staggering need to upgrade transportation of goods to "east coast ports," perhaps they should be looking at enhancing the rail system.

Who are we to deny

Who are we to deny Chattanoogans access to Asheville's ports?

Heh

Taking that a step further, North Carolina doesn't have much in the way of "ports," anyway. And if they are talking about ports in South Carolina or Virginia, they might as well drive an existing route through Georgia or up I-81.

This road would be almost as

This road would be almost as big a disaster as I-3.

Both are driven by the fact that Doze and Pave developers have run out of large tracts of accessable land close to poulation centers and need tax payers to pave new roads to large tracts of wilderness.

If their stated reasons were actually the reasons, there are cheaper better alternatives than carving monster highways through what is left of the Southland.

It's not as ambitious. For one thing, it's considered mostly complete, since it's been a project since 1965. There are two stretches left, the one through/around Ocoee Gorge and another in Western N.C. If you follow the link to the Stop I-3 site, there is a map. The WNC stretch is even more worrisome.

I swear these people just lay out road maps, find empty spots and say, "There!" without any concern for the topography. If God wanted Chattanoogans to go to Asheville, she'd have connected the two somehow, like with a river or something.

Where do the roads end so the forest can begin?

A four lane road through the Ocoee Gorge or anyplace near the Cherokee National Forest at an estimated 2.4 BILLION is just PORK BARREL spending
and is a perfect example of our Federal Government out of control. This
area in the National Forest has been un-touched and un-developed for eons
and isn't this why our Government designated it a National Forest for all future generations to enjoy for many more eons to come. A 4 lane interstate highway has no business traversing through such a pristine forest that was designated as public land and will have a negative consequence on air quality, water quality, wildlife, plant habitat and so on. Stop Corridor K and I-3 NOW......for once these roads are developed this area will never be the same

Liberal views, progressive

Liberal views, progressive views are not what has made tennessee such a beautiful and great place to live.. Tennessee is a Republican state and Republican Ideas and values are what has Tennessee such a great place to live.. Liberal views are not Progressive. I do understand that the so called progressive view stand for reform of political and religious Ideas but just think a moment......... Why reform our great Consertaive Republican State or our Churches? Why fix somehing that is not broken? When I go to states that have adopted these ideas like Nj, Ny, Ca, Ma, Il for example, they all have this in common - High taxes, bad roads and the worst education systems in the nation......... tennessee has some of the Best roads and education in the nation, we have the best self governing body. Our religious Ideas have not changed, Christ is the same today, yesterday and forever. ..... I got a Idea, My familey has been in Tennessee for over 200 years. Were not going to sell our homes, turn over our schools or churches . Why don't you move to another state like Il and partake in some of the great liberal jobs created working for the auto ind, drive on there smooth roads and let your children go to there fine schools like the ones in Chiciago, Il. and leave the worst schools like the ones in tennessee alone..............

Helpful hint:

When using one of those new variable speed spell checkers it's a good idea to set it for 'Some College' instead of 'Ignorant Redneck'.

'Rocket Scientist' should be used sparingly.
