He served as Administrative Editor for Transactions Tennessee Business Law Journal, worked with the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program and was a member of both the Tennessee Student Bar Association and the Tennessee Organization of MBAs.

During his time in law school and business school, Stansell spent time at the University of Bonn, Germany, studying the relationship between European nations and their relationships with the United States, and also traveled with members of his business school class to Santiago, Chile to meet with business leaders and learn more about the Chilean economy and its recent changes.

Prior to his graduate studies, Stansell received his B.A. in College Scholars (emphases in Political Science and Economics) from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, in 1997. During his undergraduate studies, Stansell was involved in a number of extracurricular pursuits, including serving in a number of positions in student government and as a summer orientation leader, and was elected to numerous honor societies. Through a study abroad program, he spent a semester at the University of Oxford, England, studying political science, economics, history and art history from a European perspective.

Stansell financed his entire undergraduate education through scholarship awards, including being named a Whittle Scholar and a National Merit Scholar, and financed a significant amount of his graduate education through scholarships awarded by both the College of Law and the College of Business Administration.

Stansell grew up in Athens, Tennessee, where he attended public schools throughout his educational career.
