Elephant Cows Stampede!!

Submitted by Blue Sumner Daze on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 20:08.

Apparently things are heating up in the Sumner County races. Threatened by intelligent challengers who speak in full sentences about matters of substance rather than in talking point sound bites, both Diane Black and Debra Maggart have abruptly resigned from the League of Women Voters.

Shelley Ames, co-president of the Hendersonville league, contends that the group remains a nonpartisan political organization that encourages active participation in government. While the league doesn't endorse specific candidates or parties, Ames acknowledged that the organization does oppose particular pieces of legislation supported by Black and Maggart.

The legislators disagree with the league's opposition to: establishing a taxpayer bill of rights; requiring voter photo identification at the ballot box; and new language in the state constitution declaring, "Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion."

Because there's nothing more critical to women voters than

1) bogus platitudes about "taxpayer's rights" in a state supported by the highly regressive sales tax, including a tax on food;

2) making the ballot box less accessible to voters, for example elderly nuns and

3) insuring that the government takes care of those weighty medical decisions so a little magnolia blossom need not trouble her mind with those big questions.

Well I'm sure they can find a nice discussion group at the Ivory and Tusk club. Or perhaps they're just chicken?

Tired of Shovelling Elephant Dung

This article certainly hit the spot. I'm tired of the antics of Black and Maggart. They seemed to forget Sumner Countians some time ago for their own self interests. As a native Sumner County woman, I think it's time Sumner County asked these two to leave their legislative offices just like they left the League.

Good for this chapter for

Good for this chapter for standing up to these bullies.

Their argument, and a rebuttal

Sen Black and Rep Maggart claim the League is partisan -- that's the argument that has to be refuted, and it's easy to do:

Not all Republicans are pro-life, and not all Democrats are pro-choice.
Not all Republicans support TBOR, and not all Democrats oppose it.
Not all Republicans support photo ID, and not all Democrats oppose it.
Not all Republicans oppose a state income tax, and not all Democrats oppose it.

The League isn't endorsing a party -- it's advocating for particular pieces of legislation.

Black and Maggart are simply wrong, but are using the popular GOP tactic of demonizing those with whom they disagree. Their argument isn't simply that they want to leave a group with whom they have political differences -- that wouldn't be a problem with anyone -- but that they have to attack its integrity.

The League has always engaged in advocacy, and continued to do so when Black and Maggart were members. Apparently it was a fine organization, until this election year, when Black becomes a vulnerable candidate.

btw, the title's a big sexist. Referring to women as "cows" is not okay.

More editing. Grrr.

"big sexist" should be "bit sexist."

I'm going to try to wake up now.

Agreed. I should have noted that earlier.

What's the real reason?

The League has held these positions consistently for many years -during which time Black, and to a lesser extent Maggart, were members. Why choose now to resign? Perhaps because the League supports candidate debates between Black/Maggart and Hawkins/Allman. Incumbents rarely need or desire to debate. In this case, probably more so. Black and Maggart have litte record, Black is hyper-partisan, even changing position on cigarette tax hikes to assuage the GOP in the Senate. These two against two trained and successful lawyers who have actual ideas for miving Sumner County forward? I'd shy away as well.

In addition, if one is upset with the direction an organization is taking, one initiates reform from within, not without. Stick around and try to make things "better," or cut-and-run?
