Dems finally have a 2008 Senate candidate?

Well, at least the Dem column won't be blank on the U.S. Senate primary ballot.

According to the Leaf Chronicle, Chris Lugo, the Dennis Kucinich of Tennessee politics, has switched from the Green Party and this time will run as a Democrat for the nomination to run in the fall against Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Right wing bloggers and pundits will no doubt have lots of dismissive fun with Lugo's announcement. But what's not to like about his platform? And let the record show that he is the first (self-proclaimed) Democrat to step up to the plate.

As long as he has cut that

As long as he has cut that beard; no one wants their Senate candidate to look like a Mennonite farmer......

Memphis IS LeftTennessee!

Heh. I saw him the other

Heh. I saw him the other day and the beard is there in all its glory, as are the dreads.

I'm glad to see he's made the switch to Dem; I'll be voting for him. Can't wait to see how well he does.

Better to have a perennial candidate

... and not to need him than to need him and not have him.

The upside:

  • Lamar has to spend more time and money in Tennessee instead of trying to beat Mary Landrieu in Louisiana.
  • Any opposition that can get press attention will pull Lamar toward the center.
  • Maybe a loyal Democrat will be shamed into stepping up.

Liberty and justice for all.
