Bredesen to cave in on AT&T bill?

Submitted by R. Neal on Fri, 01/18/2008 - 07:43.

Looks like Bredesen is set to cave in on the AT&T cable franchise bill. Coincidentally, his communications director has just left and gone to work for AT&T's lobbyist.

Gov. Bredesen cites the need to expand broadband access as the justification. I agree we need expanded broadband access. This is not, however, the way to achieve it.

Read the AP report here. More commentary at Volunteer Voters. Background on the bill here.

"The issue for me is not

"The issue for me is not coming down on the side of cable or AT&T - it's just an issue of that I don't think we have adequate broadband coverage in Tennessee."

So the job of AT&T comes down to convincing him that cable de-reg would lead to increased broadband buildout.

I suppose that all depends on what sort of buildout is most important to Tennesseans; high-value residential customers in affluent areas of the major metros, or to rural areas where the payoff is much longer term and has not been a priority, historically, for the telcos (which is why broadband coverage statewide is inadequate in the first place; duh).

GAAAH! OK, going to have to

GAAAH! OK, going to have to start reciting reasons not to think Bredesen is bad for the state...but for every good thing he does, there's an occasional real bonehead move...this being one of them.

Is this a done deal?

AH

I don't have to think about reasons whay not, as far as I am concerned Bredesen should have run on a republican ticket!

Sorry folks, I haven't liked his fast track to corporations office since the day a representative for it talked to a bunch of Real Estate agents in Memphis and explained how Bredesen was all about bringing coporations to TN no matter the cost.

Well thats great and we do need the jobs for sure, but will they be minimum wage jobs, or barely above minimum wage. And, are they getting 100 year contracts with no property tax and other concessions off the back of the individual tax payers?

No, I am not glad for or about Bredesen, how many facts do you think you can find out about the deals that are fast tracked through the "Welcome to Tennessee Coporation double wide door"?

Getting Nissan to relocate their corporate HQ here was something of a coup - and those folks do make significantly more than minimum wage.

Great - Nissan got to TN -

Great - Nissan got to TN - and I hear you!

"a coup - and those folks do make significantly more than minimum wage"

Great we got the executives that can afford to pay taxes and most likely if they are like Warren Buffet who pays less income tax then his Secretary that makes around $60,000 per year compared to his millions, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy for both Bedesen and Nissan!

Are the details to the deal public? Does anyone know? Do you think it is right for companies to pay none, or $1.00/year on hundred year contracts for property tax, and keep in mind they already get lower rates on utilites called "corporate rates" sometimes?

I am not for bringing in the corporations for "jobs" with the concessions the companies get, that ultimately adds more burden on the lower income tax payer making their wages even less then what they would have been, because the lost tax revenue (which was forgiven or reduced for the coporations) has to be made up by adding additional or heavier taxes on them.

And, don't forget the streets that get added, new land development cost, traffic lights, and added police patrol coverage for these companies that are getting concessions at the additional burden to the individual tax payer.

I am all for jobs, growth, added potential retail revenues for the state, but somewhere, sometime, things got turned upside down where the companies and their owners get all the breaks on the burden of those of lessor income, the burden is not fairly distributed at all.

I want the playing field equalled out and the burden shouldered more fairly.

We also got all of their marketing staff, their IT staff, their designers, their QA teams, their accountants, hundreds more -- everyone that goes into running a corporation. Not just executives.

You should come to Nashville and meet some of them.

But we don't do taxes in Tennessee, hadn't you heard?
