U.S. Senate

Well, at least the Dem column won't be blank on the U.S. Senate primary ballot.

According to the Leaf Chronicle, Chris Lugo, the Dennis Kucinich of Tennessee politics, has switched from the Green Party and this time will run as a Democrat for the nomination to run in the fall against Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Right wing bloggers and pundits will no doubt have lots of dismissive fun with Lugo's announcement. But what's not to like about his platform? And let the record show that he is the first (self-proclaimed) Democrat to step up to the plate.

Sen. Lamar Alexander takes over as chair of the Senate Republican Conference .

As the man in charge of shaping the GOP message in the U.S. Senate, this will presumably give him an even stronger advantage against any challenger that might emerge in 2008.

It's also possible that Republicans are looking for a more centrist, moderate style of leadership in this role to heal the divide created by Bush and bring more independents and moderates back into the GOP fold in an effort to cut their losses next year.
