We're on the road to Denver, and will be arriving some time this afternoon. A couple of dispatches from the road at KnoxViews:
From the DNCC: Tuesday night’s featured speakers include Convention Co-Chair Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, both early supporters of Barack Obama, who will outline his detailed economic plan to grow the economy, create jobs, restore fairness and expand opportunity. Governors Ted Strickland of Ohio and Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania will discuss how the failed policies of the last eight years have betrayed our values and left an economy out of balance. Barack Obama believes you can’t have a strong economy when you have a weak middle class, and speakers like Senator Bob Casey, Jr. of Pennsylvania and Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts will share how Obama’s policies have been directly shaped by the people he has met as he traveled the country. Building on Obama’s New Economy with New Energy message, Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana and Federico Peña, former Mayor of Denver and Secretary of both Energy and Transportation, will speak about the nexus between energy and the economy and highlight new and innovative policies to help working families in rural, urban and suburban communities. As announced earlier this week, Mark Warner, former Governor of Virginia, will deliver the Convention’s keynote address, and Senator Hillary Clinton, who is a champion for working families and one of the most effective and empathetic voices in the country today, will be the headline prime-time speaker on Tuesday night. Many citizens and representatives of Denver do not want to be known as a Western town to DNC visitors. They're a little miffed at The New York Times Travel section article. According to Bill Husted, with The Denver Post:
Welcome to Denver? Colorado Democratic Representative Diana DeGette suggested a western themed welcoming party for delegates and news media. Apparently organizers and sponsors did not take kindly to the suggestion. Denver Mayor Hickenlooper wants to instead promote the "New West", e.g. the booming energy industry and mass transportation in metro Denver. Therefore, the Democratic National Convention of 2008 will be held at the Elitch Gardens Theme Park. That's a heckuva way to show your "vibrant cultural scene". ( categories: )
The Democratic National Committee and Barack Obama want to involve America in developing the Democratic National Platform. The public is invited to a series of community platform meetings in all 50 states, and the DNC will provide policy experts wherever they can. Here is the 2004 Democratic National Platform. Have we made progress on these issues? Or do we have to first get a Democrat in the White House and 60 Democratic votes in the Senate? More details in the presser after the jump... ( categories: )
I have just received word from the Director of Online Communications for the Democratic National Convention Committee that KnoxViews/TennViews has been selected as the official credentialed Tennessee blog for the August 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. Part of the deal is that yours truly will be seated alongside the Tennessee delegation on the convention floor ("one of the best seats in the house") to live-blog the greatest political event in recent history. Developing... UPDATE: DNC Chairman Governor Dean Announces Blogs Selected For 2008 Democratic National Convention 'State Blogger Corps' "Similar to the record-breaking voter turnout our Party has seen during the primary season, the demand for these coveted blogger positions is yet another indicator of the tremendous interest in this historic Convention," said Governor Dean.
